degeneration of muscles

Muscular Dystrophy—Treated with the Help of Ayurveda

Let’s see ‘What Muscular Dystrophy is?.’

“Muscular Dystrophy” is the degeneration of muscles. In Muscular Dystrophy, abnormal genes hinder the production of proteins that are needed in the formation of healthy tissues. It eventually leads to several physical problems such as frequent falls, inability to walk, difficulty in standing and so on. “Madras Institute of Ayurveda, Vadapalani, Chennai provides holistic service to patients suffering from progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.

Ayurveda has some very effective treatments that can decrease the symptoms and provide relief to the patients.

According to Ayurveda, to maintain a healthy body—the three doshas- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are needed to be in perfect balance. Muscular Dystrophy is described as the ‘Mamsashosha’, meaning imbalance of ‘Vata dosha and Sapta Dhatus [the essential seven elements required to maintain body structure]. Vitiation in the digestive fire [Agni- needed for the digestion of food in the stomach] of any of these dhatus, leads to improper absorption of nutrients which results in weakness.

Herbal Remedies for Muscular Dystrophy, ‘degeneration of muscles’ , —Ayurveda takes a holistic approach in the treatment.

Many herbs can manage muscular Dystrophy and prevent the condition from getting worse. Here are few effective herbs that are recommended in Ayurveda, to manage his disorder—

  • Ashwagandha-The rejuvenating and regenerative properties of ashwagandha can help to preserve the muscle mass. It can promote regeneration of the muscle cells, eventually restoring muscle mass.
  • Giloy – acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces the damage to the muscle. It can also produce an antioxidant effect and protect the muscle tissues against–free radical damage.
  • Arjuna- This herb is particularly beneficial for preventing the cardiac complications of this disease. It can improve the functions of the heart, ease the breathing and improve the quality of life.
  • Brahmi- this herb helps to improve the muscle mass and enhance the functions of the nerves. It prevents oxidative damage to the muscle tissues and acts as an antioxidant.

The ayurvedic medicine for Muscular Dystrophy is aimed at providing holistic treatment that brings about a long-lasting relief. The ayurvedic approach also includes making appropriate changes in the diet such as – including healing foods for Muscular Dystrophy.

Ayurvedic way of eating food— Unless medicine is accompanied with proper diet, health issues cannot be treated correctly. Always eat food- warm, fresh and hygienic, light and easily digestible, according to one’s body type and at the right time.

Panchakarma -treatment may be recommended to prevent the worsening of the condition due to the damage caused by the toxins accumulated in the body. This therapy detoxifies the blood.

So, with all this said about the treatment therapies for Muscular Dystrophy or degeneration of muscles, it needs to be put in action—At Madras Institute of Ayurveda, it’s possible. “Madras Institute of Ayurveda” is located, in the heart of Chennai and is a place where authentic and established techniques are offered as a treatment for various health problems.

SINUSITIS TREATMENT

SINUSITIS TREATMENT WITH ANCIENT AYURVEDA

Let us first learn—What Sinusitis is—

SINUSITIS TREATMENT: Sinusitis– is a condition in which the cavities around the nasal passages become inflamed. Nasal congestion is usually owing to swollen nasal membranes from inflammation of the blood vessels.

Acute Sinusitis could be triggered by a cold or an allergy and may resolve on its own whereas–Chronic Sinusitis lasts up to eight weeks and may be caused by an infection or growth.

Symptoms include–headache, nasal congestion and runny nose.

Acute Sinusitis usually does not need any treatment beyond symptomatic relief with pain medication, nasal decongestants and nasal saline rinses. Chronic Sinusitis will require treatment.

Conditions that can cause Sinusitis-

  • Allergic rhinitis, which is an oedema of the nasal mucosa
  • Small growth in the nasal mucosa
  • A deviated septum
  • Swelling in the nose as in a common cold

Infection of the subacute sinus lasts typically 6 to 12 weeks. Symptoms of chronic inflammation persist for about 12 weeks, and recurrent Sinusitis occurs several times a year.

Treatment of Sinusitis with Ayurveda—

Diet—

  • Do not consume Kaphakara Aharas such as ice cream, cottage cheese, milk, banana, oily foods, fried foods and other junk foods.
  • Avoid fruits at night.
  • Avoid drinking too much water and drink only warm water when you feel thirsty.
  • Food should include turmeric, pepper and ginger.

Lifestyle—

  • Avoid taking a head bath and limit oil application.
  • Try not to expose yourself directly to air-condition,fan or sitting near a window while travelling in an open vehicle.
  • Steam inhalation * twice daily with camphor or a few drops of eucalyptus oil in water.
  • A warm compress on the affected areas provides relief from pain and heaviness.

Home Remedies for Sinus

? Have

freshly prepared warm foods. Also, eat lots of vegetables and fresh fruits in your diet plan.

?Drink warm water only or add cinnamon and black pepper to your drinking water.

?Avoid cold items

?Eat garlic and ginger

?Take enough rest

?Sleep on one side with a pillow lower the head. This can prevent the flow of mucus in the air passages.

Because of the rising pollution, the inner layer of the nose gets inflamed. To balance this, our body produces more nasal secretions & sneezes to pull out this dust and dirt. If these secretions are not allowed to discharge (with the help of anti-allergic medicines or inhalers), they can sit in the sinuses and irritate. This leads to severe headaches.

Sinus Treatment with Ayurveda—

Nasyam or otherwise called Nasya Karma is a distinctive and one of the five detoxification therapies mentioned in Ayurveda, very successful in treating Sinusitis. Recurrence can also be prevented with this. Ayurvedic treatment for Sinusitis includes expelling intensified body energies with the help of some Ayurvedic Herbs and diet. Nasal therapies and applications can also help. The ayurvedic regimen removes the root causes of Sinusitis by eliminating toxic build-up, improve metabolism, reducing Vata imbalance and provide relief from stress. Panchakarma, the traditional detoxification treatments of Ayurveda treatments form the cornerstone of your in-door treatment program.

What we can do—

Cover nose with a mask or scarf while leaving the house.

Secretions should not be blocked, instead should be freed up. Do Nasya treatment.

These remedies can cure frequent chronic cold, Sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and headaches.

It is essential to take proper care when you have Sinusitis. With Ayurveda, you have zero side effects, and the results are guaranteed.

In a nutshell–

Imbalanced doshas cause Sinusitis. The Nasya and other medicated oil massages can cure sinus.

Treating Hemorrhoids with Ayurveda

Treating Hemorrhoids with Ayurveda

Ayurveda says that there are three doshas or body types, namely: Pitta, Vata, and Kapha. Each one relates to a specific element — fire (pitta), air (Vata), and water (Kapha) — and a person with one dominant dosha, displays physical or emotional characteristics- Treating Hemorrhoids with Ayurveda.

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins found in and around the anus and rectum. They can be either internal or external. Some symptoms of haemorrhoids (or piles) include:

  • pain or itchy swelling around the anus
  • pain during bowel movements
  • bleeding during or after bowel movements
  • irritation and pain around the anus

The goal is to balance each dosha, which is done through a combination of diet, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies.

It’s essential to know for sure you have haemorrhoids. There are a few Ayurvedic approaches to treat haemorrhoids; you could try as well.

Types of haemorrhoids depending on the dosha

In Ayurvedic belief is that your dominant dosha determines the kind of haemorrhoids you may experience:

  • People who are Pitta may experience bleeding haemorrhoids that are soft and red. They may also have a fever, diarrhoea, and a feeling of thirst.
  • People who are Vata may experience severe pain, constipation, and black haemorrhoids.
  • People who are Kapha might have poor digestion and haemorrhoids that are white, soft, and large.

Ayurvedic Remedy

Ayurvedic approaches to haemorrhoid treatment are considered holistic. People experiencing haemorrhoids who want to try treating them with Ayurvedic medicine can make use of herbal remedies, lifestyle changes, and non- invasive procedures as part of their treatment plan.

  • Medication or Bhaisajya Chikitsa

Most minor haemorrhoids can be treated with medication only. No other procedures are needed unless haemorrhoids are severe. In the worst cases, medicines may be used in addition to methods.

The dosha will factor into the medicinal remedies your Ayurvedic practitioner chooses and any dietary or lifestyle changes they recommend to prevent a recurrence.

Kshara is an alkaline paste used to treat haemorrhoids. The paste is made of herbal blends and has a searing effect. The paste chemically sterilises haemorrhoid.

In Ayurveda, this Kshara karma method is considered to be the best approach for treating haemorrhoids.

Depending on your dosha type, you will be advised to take medications, to balance your body—as you recover. You may also need to make dietary and lifestyle adjustments to support the healing.

  • Surgical Intervention or Sastra Chikitsa

Your Ayurvedic expert may recommend a therapy called kshara sutra. Kshara sutra uses particular medicated thread to tie haemorrhoid off at the base.

This will allow the haemorrhoid to shrink over the next 7 to 10 days. This approach will be considered only when other treatments are not effective.

Your Ayurvedic practitioner will take into account–your dosha when it comes to treating it. You will need specific herbs to support postoperative healing. It is also necessary to make some permanent changes in diet, exercise, and other factors to avoid future haemorrhoids.

  • Cleansing or Agni karma

External haemorrhoids can be sterilised using infrared heat. The Ayurvedic practitioner might offer to burn off the haemorrhoids. This therapy might require five to six treatments over the same number of weeks before it makes a difference. Once again, your dosha will be considered before medical care. There is potential for increased pain with this procedure.

Conclusion—

While Ayurvedic haemorrhoid treatments appear to be safe and effective, it’s essential to weigh your options. Talk to your doctor and practitioner before you decide which course to take.

Treating Hyperacidity

Treating Hyperacidity with the Help of Ayurveda

Amlapitta or Hyperacidity is one of the most common issues. Hyperacidity–points out to a set of symptoms caused by an imbalance between acid-secretion of the stomach and intestine and the protective mechanisms that ensure their safety. The stomach generally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process. When there is excess acid produced in the stomach, it results in Hyperacidity.

Causes—

Individuals with a Pitta [heat energy] imbalance, are prone to occasional acid indigestion and heartburn. Stress, anger, spicy foods, and environmental factors such as heat, can worsen Pitta.

Few simple changes in lifestyle can help bring Pitta in balance for smoother, more effective digestion and greater calm and contentment.

Consuming Ahara [Diet] such as—

Spicy, salty and sour foods, stale or fermented, excessive intake of coffee or tea, and so on can cause acidity. Skipping meals, late-night eating and repeatedly eating can cause the issue.

The following Regimen (Vihara) can also lead to acidity–

  • Lack of rest, fast-moving lifestyle, worry, anxiety, fear and anger
  • Insufficient sleep at night.
  • Sleeping immediately after meals.
  • Suppression of natural urges.

Signs and symptoms

Heart &chest burn, sour belching, nausea, regurgitation of food or acidic substance, vomiting, gaseous distention of the abdomen, heaviness in the stomach, indigestion, headache, mouth ulcer, fatigue and more.

Therefore, it is better to avoid all the causative factors of Amlapitta, which are—

Excessive salt, oily, sour and spicy foods, cumbersome and untimely food, smoking and alcohol intake, overcooked and stale food.

Ayurvedic treatment—

  • Avoid the factors that cause acidity
  • Palliative treatment–As the disease is of Pitta origin, all measures are undertaken to pacify Pitta.
  • Panchakarma treatment–When acidity cannot be corrected with oral medicines ‘Panchakarma Procedures’ like Vamana (Emesis) or Virechana (Purgation), whichever is needed should be administered. In chronic cases, Asthapanavasti (medicated enema) is indicated.

Essential Ayurvedic medications useful in Amlapitta

  • Yashtimadhu – 3gm twice a day mixed with milk
  • Amalaki (Gooseberry) – 3gm twice a day with water
  • Sunthi (dry ginger) – 3gm twice a day with water
  • Shatavari – 3gm twice a day with milk

Management of Liver Cirrhosis

Management of Liver Cirrhosis with the Help of Ancient Ayurveda

Cirrhosis is a complication of many liver diseases. It is a chronic state in which the liver slowly degenerates and crashes due to chronic liver injury. Scar tissue replaces the healthy liver tissue, partially blocking the flow of blood through the organ.

A healthy liver can revitalise most of its cells when they become damaged, but with end-stage Liver Cirrhosis, the liver can no longer effectively replace damaged cells.

Cirrhosis is the prevalent leading cause of death, accounting for around 28,000 deaths every year.

Causes

Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by excessive intake of alcohol, hepatitis B and C, and fatty liver disease, but has many other possible reasons—

  •       Obesityis a prevalent cause of Cirrhosis, either as the sole cause or in combination with alcohol or hepatitis C.
  •       Alcohol-related liver disease– Heavy alcohol use over several years can cause chronic injury to the liver. Deaths caused by obesity-related Cirrhosis are increasing.
  •       Hepatitis C– Chronic hepatitis C causes inflammation and damage to the liver over time that can lead to Cirrhosis.
  •       Hepatitis B and D– The hepatitis B virus is a liver infection that is spread by proximity with an infected person’s blood or other body fluid. Hepatitis B can also cause liver inflammation and injury, which could lead to Cirrhosis. The hepatitis B vaccination is given to all infants and many adults to prevent that virus. Hepatitis D infects the liver and can lead to Cirrhosis, but it occurs only in people who already have hepatitis B.
  • Nonalcoholicfatty liver disease(NAFLD) – In this type of liver disease, fat builds up in the liver and eventually ends up in Liver Cirrhosis. The progressively common liver disease is associated with obesity, diabetes, protein malnutrition, and so on.
  •       Autoimmune hepatitis– is caused by the body’s immune system attacking liver cells and causing inflammation, damage, and eventually Cirrhosis.
  •       Inherited diseases– Cystic fibrosis, galactosemia, and glycogen storage diseases are inherited disorders, which interferes with how the liver builds, processes, and stores enzymes, proteins, metals, and other substances the body needs, Cirrhosis can result from these conditions.

Symptoms

Many people with Liver Cirrhosis have no symptoms in the early stages of the disease, but as the condition progresses, they may experience the following symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Jaundice
  • Fluid retention (oedema) and swelling in the ankles, legs, and abdomen
  • Spiderlike veins
  • A brownish tint to the urine
  • Light-coloured stools
  • Blood in the stool
  • Fever

Ayurveda Management

The liver is called Yakrit in Ayurveda. Most of the liver disorders are aggravated conditions of Pitta. Excessive bile production or any blockage in the flow of bile indicates high Pitta, which in turn affects the Agni [Digestive Fire] or enzyme activities responsible for absorption, digestion and metabolism.

Kumbha Kamala is the classic description of Cirrhosis of the liver according to Ayurveda.

It is a neglected or untreated stage of jaundice or hepatitis, when it becomes chronic, produces dry or roughness to the Liver (Kharathva or Rookshatva). The condition has to be attended to, immediately. Treatment involves Shodhana Chikitsa (detoxification through Panchakarma procedures), Shamana Chikitsa [therapy] and Kayakalpa (rejuvenation). Ayurvedic treatment is useful in improving liver health and preventing further damage to it.

De-addiction, diet restrictions and lifestyle modifications are also essential factors practised for the best possible results.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Healthy Liver Function

*Turmeric

Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory ‘spice’ that is regarded very highly in Ayurveda for its purification effects. It is often used in diet to detoxify the liver. While it is known to balance all doshas, turmeric excels at Pacifying Pitta, therefore making it a perfect remedy for liver diseases.

*Ginger

‘Ginger’ is one of the most frequently used herbs across the world. It is regarded as a superfood that destroys Ama or toxins and supports healthy digestion and respiration. Although its Rasa and Virya make it potentially Pitta aggravating, it can be beneficial for the liver when consumed in moderation. As an antioxidant agent, ginger can reduce oxidative stress, counter inflammation, and inhibit other factors that contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver. Include fresh ginger or ginger powder to your drinks and dishes or use ginger supplements.

*Cinnamon

Cinnamon doesn’t just have a delectable flavour; it is also very healthy. Cinnamon is also used in many Ayurvedic formulations. With a sweet rasa and tart, the herb an excellent pacifying agent for the Vata and Kapha

*Amla

Amla, better known as Indian gooseberry, has been an essential Ayurvedic ingredient. It is used in a range of herbal formulations—like Chyawanaprash and Triphala. Amla has a balancing effect on all three doshas and is known for its immune-boosting fact. Amla supports general health and is believed to help lower toxicity levels in the body.

Conclusion

There are no approved drugs for conditions like fatty liver disease. Maintaining healthy body weight is broadly regarded as an essential strategy for the management of the liver disease.

Treating Hypertension with Ayurveda

Treating Hypertension with Ayurveda

Hypertension, called Rakta Gata Vata in Ayurveda, is elevated blood pressure in the arteries. Blood pressure of an average healthy adult individual is 120 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic.

Causes of Hypertension

Unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyles are the main reasons for hypertension nowadays. Impaired digestion due to consumption of the wrong type of foods, leads to accumulation of Ama (toxins), that further lead to high blood pressure. The food consumed is digested with the help of the digestive fire (Jatharagni). The plasma that is produced nourishes all other dhatus (body tissues) and aids in the production of healthy blood, which circulates in the body through various channels.

When digestion is diminished, the nutrient plasma ends up producing digestive impurities or Ama. The toxins formed, cause narrowing of the channels. As a result, the blood has to apply more pressure, leading to increased pressure in the blood. Stress, anxiety and negative feelings also cause a rise in blood pressure. Other causes could be–hereditary, obesity, lack of exercise, consumption of high-fat and low-fibre diet and refined foods.

Symptoms

  • Pain at the back of the neck
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Fatigue

Ayurvedic Regimen

Treating hypertension with Ayurveda has a long-term and more profound impact as it addresses the root cause of the problem, instead of just controlling the symptoms. The therapy aims at identifying the root cause of the condition and then administering herbs that can fix the problem from the roots. To achieve this–

An Ayurvedic Approach in Treating Oesophageal Hiatus Hernia

“Hiatus hernia” is a common condition in middle-aged and elderly women. In this condition, the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm and up into the thoracic cavity. The portion of the stomach above the diaphragm looks like a rupture known as Vidagdhajirna in Ayurveda.

Causes of Hiatus Hernia-

Overweight, obesity and intake of spicy and sour foods are among the major causes of this disorder. Stress, anxiety, tension, anger, and fear also play a crucial role in aggravating this disease. Anatomical defects related to the oesophagus can also cause this disease. Conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure, like intestinal obstruction and flatulence can also push the stomach upwards resulting in Hiatus Hernia.

Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Acid Reflux

Ayurvedic Approach

With Hiatus Hernia, one or more of the following Doshas may be aggravated—Vata, Pitta or Kapha. If you have an imbalance of one of these doshas, Ayurveda recommends avoiding foods and lifestyle habits that aggravate it. These imbalanced doshas and qualities may need to be brought back into balance before the condition can be healed.

The fluidity of Pitta Dosha increases in Vidagdhajirna and extinguishes the gastric fire, so digestion gets affected. Food starts getting fermented that leads to indigestion. Apart from the symptoms mentioned above, Ayurveda pinpoints excess sweating, thirst, vomiting, fever, giddiness, burning of eyes and unconsciousness as characteristic features of Vidagdhajirna. It may manifest into painful ulcers. Ayurvedic treatment focusses on balancing body energies and restoring healthy digestion.

Diet & Lifestyle Changes–

Structural imbalance responsible for Oesophageal hiatus hernia can be corrected by following a proper lifestyle and food regimen.

  • Food intake should be regular. Late night meals should be strictly avoided.
  • Fermented foods and sour eatables should be avoided. No junk foods too.
  • Coffee, tea carbonated drinks and alcohol should stop.
  • Spices that increase heat, like garlic, onion, ginger, pepper, chilli and cinnamon should be avoided.
  • Spicy gravies, sour, salty and spicy non-veg foods are equally harmful.

Home Remedies

  • Take Amalaki Churna with pure ghee or any amla[gooseberry] preparations.
  • Take preparations of Shatavari regularly.
  • Pomegranates are beneficial in Oesophageal hiatus hernia.
